My collection was inspired by a combination of punk and whimsy. The idea of rebellion, and being yourself no matter what the rest of the world thinks. I was really inspired by the rebellion in the hunger games scene, punk, and emo fashion, along with music. Punk and other similar subcultures are rooted in the music and so is this collection. The main inspiration for the collection is the song Pulse by Icon For Hire. specifically the lyric “ stack us in boxes, thats where you want us card board is boring we brought our matches, cardboard is boring look how it burns” This quote connects so well to the ideas of punk and rebellion that I wanted my collection to represent and the idea that you can be whoever you want to be, and dress however you want to no matter what society thinks of you. I was also really inspired by the quote by yungbud be yourself or die trying, and the quote you have to flaunt the weird my friends. This collection was about self expression, and individuality in a way that combines the ideas of punk and whimsy. 

In terms of sustainability almost all of my fabric was dead stock. I also did not throw away a single scrap of fabric. For my small business that I own I make a lot of plushies and I use scrap fabric to stuff them, so every single scrap will be saved and used, and if it is too small to sew with it will become plushy stuffing. 

For techniques I explored a lot of different things in this collection. I used crochet in a lot of different ways to add detail and surface design. I crocheted as you typically would, I used tapestry crochet, and I crocheted while also incorporating yarn made of strips of fabric. I also hand painted on one look, and covered the bodice in hand painted song lyrics. I used a lot of hand distressing denim patchwork for the one pair of pants. Finally I also used a lot of patches. My vest is covered in hand made embroidered patches. To add more detail there are also safety pins, spikes, studs, and keys sewn onto the vest but also other garments as well. 

My collection is for my small business Mission Misfit designs. I started the business after making a crochet Dino for a pin cushion, and since then I couldn't stop making plushies. This is why I even made a dino into a bag for the collection. The entire collection would ideally one day be apart of my brand in some way or another, and all of the scraps are already being used in plushies that I make. My brand is all about the same things as this collection which is why it all fits together so well, the idea of being a little weird, or a little out there, a misfit, or a custom catastrophe.
